1st time applicants (SORA or Armed SORA)

Before taking the course, students need to register first with the NJ State Police on their website. It will be the registrants responsibility to sign up for the appropriate SORA designation (either SORA or Armed SORA) The registrant will receive a 30 day temporary ID number. Within that time frame, the student will need to take the 24 hour SORA class, as well have their finger prints done. After the aforementioned steps have been completed within the 30 day time frame, the student will receive their SORA card in the mail from the NJ State Police within 10 business days.

This standardized security officer program will review the following topics:
• Theft Prevention
• Ethics and Professional Conduct
• Report Writing
• NJ Use of Force Policy
• Street Gangs
• First Aid/CPR
• Incident Command Systems
• Cargo Theft
• Suicide Bombs and Vehicle borne improvised explosive devices (VBIED’s)
• Suspicious Letters and Packages
• Security Measures- Prevention and Deterrence
• New Jersey’s Critical Infrastructure Awareness
• Terrorism Awareness

Course Length: 24 hours

ALL STUDENTS MUST REGISTER 5 DAYS PRIOR TO THE DATE OF THE CLASS BY SENDING AN EMAIL THAT INCLUDES THEIR NAME, CONTACT INFORMATION AND TEMPORARY ID NUMBER. NO WALK-INS WILL BE ALLOWED. Students MUST have a photo ID in their possession, as well as their temporary ID number, on the day of the class. 

NJ SORA Renewal

The students SORA card needs to be renewed before its expiration date. That is initially done through the NJ State Police website. Once the temporary ID number is issued, the applicant must take the 8 hour renewal course within a 30 day period. Once both of these steps have been completed, the student will receive their SORA card in the mail from the NJ State Police within 10 business days. Armed SORA certifications need to be renewed every year. SORA certifications need to be renewed every two years.
